What is it?

The WAMUG Mailing List is an online forum for everything Apple Macintosh. Many people on this list are professional Apple and Macintosh users. If you have a question, please don’t hesitate to ask 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you have found some interesting Apple news that you think other members may be interested in, then feel free to post it and share it.

If you have had an unusual problem but managed to solve it yourself, or with help from another source, feel free to post the problem and solution in case someone else hits it.

Who can use it?

The mailing list is a member only email list, although, it is available for viewing to anyone through the archives.

Only WAMUG members can subscribe and actually post to the list and in turn receive the list emailed to their nominated email address.

How do I subscribe?

To subscribe, simply click on the link below which will take you to our subscribe page.

When subscribing, go to the ‘Subscribing to wamug…’ area of the page where you will need to complete your email address. Your name is optional and you also have the choice to enter a password or not. However, if you choose not to enter a password, one will be generated for you. Choose whether you would like to receive the list as a daily digest (default is no) and then hit the ‘Subscribe’ button.

I have become a member and would like to subscribe

Your request will then be manually verified with your membership status and upon confirmation that you are a member, it will be approved. You will then be sent an email welcoming you to the list and giving you details on how to post, change your details, etc. The email will also advise you of your password.

We will endeavour to complete this process as soon as possible but it may take a couple of days or so.

If you apply to subscribe to the list before you become a member, or before your payment is made or received, please be aware that your subscription request will not be actioned until you are confirmed as a member.

Your request will then be manually verified and you will be unsubscribed. A last, confirmation email, will then be sent to the email address just unsubscribed.

(If you happen to be in the actual ‘member options’ page; go to the “Unsubscribing from … wamug” area. Make sure you ‘tick’ the “Yes, I really want to unsubscribe” checkbox and simply click on the ‘Unsubscribe’ button in the unsubscribe area.)

I have changed email address, how do I edit my details?

If you wish to change your email address where the list is posted to, the procedure is very simple. Use the link below to get to our subscribe page.

Go to the ‘…wamug Subscribers’ area towards the bottom of the page. Ignore the Admin address and password area in the subscriber list part and enter your email address (the address you use for the list that you wish to change) below it in the relevant box and hit the ‘Unsubscribe or edit options’ button next to it.

Log in and you will be taken to the ‘member options’ page. Go to the ‘Changing your wamug … membership information’ area and type in your new email address. You can also change your name details here. Simply hit the ‘Change My Address and Name’ button.

I need to edit my email address

You will receive a confirmation email at your new email address with some instructions but it is generally as easy as hitting the reply button and then send to confirm your change. (This must be done within three days or the confirmation will time out.) You will then receive a second email advising you that your confirmation was successful.

Your new email address will automatically overwrite, or delete, your old email address.

This procedure is an automated one so is done straight away.

Guidelines and etiquette

As a community, WAMUG is a group of people who send each other email, generally about Macintosh issues. The group is now so large that not everyone knows everyone else, so we’ve come up with the following suggestions for your valued contributions to this list. This is not a rule-book, but a suggestion which makes your questions and answers as helpful to as many people as possible.

Before posting a message to WAMUG:

  1. Did you attempt to resolve the problem yourself?
  2. Did you search the message archive for a similar problem?
  3. Did you search the web for a similar problem?
  4. Did you give your post a relevant, meaningful Subject?
  5. It is good practice to include System Information where relevant.
  6. It is good practice to show unsuccessful attempts at resolution.
  7. It is good practice to include relevant URLs.

When you reply to a posting made by another person:

  1. Did you only respond to the list – unless specifically asked otherwise?
  2. Did you quote only appropriate parts of the message?
  3. Did you attribute the quotes correctly?
  4. It is good practice to put your response *below* the quoted part.
  5. It is good practice to include relevant URLs.
  6. It is good to be mindful of a future user who searches the archive.
  7. If you don’t *know*, then say that you’re guessing.
  8. If you’re not sure, then say that you think so.
  9. If your response is really a new post, adjust the Subject accordingly.
